Basic Facts About Ovral (Ethinyl Estradiol and Norgestrel)
Ethinyl Estradiol and Norgestrel has a combination of a number of female hormones which works through the prevention of ovulation. The drug could also cause some changes in the lining of the uterus and in the cervical mucus which would prevent the sperm from reaching the uterus and also prevent the fertilized egg to implant successfully on the lining of the uterus.
Ethinyl Estradiol and Norgestrel is essentially used for the prevention of pregnancy, but it could also be used for other purposes determined by your physician.
Administration of Ethinyl Estradiol and Norgestrel
This drug must be taken as it is prescribed specifically for you. This drug must not be taken in larger amounts or for a longer period of time than what has been recommended by your physician. You would need to take your first pill on your period’s first day or on the first Sunday following the start of your period. Make sure that you would be following the instructions of your physician.
If you would first start to sue this drug, you might still have to use some form of back-up birth control. Make sure to follow the directions of your doctor.
Ethinyl Estradiol and Norgestrel comes in a 28-day pack that has seven "reminder" pills so that you would be able to maintain your regular cycle. As you take these “reminder” pills, your period would usually begin.
You might also possibly experience some breakthrough bleeding, especially during the first 3 months you start taking this drug. Be sure that you would be informing your doctor if this bleeding persists or if it becomes heavier. Make sure that you would be taking a pill daily and not more than 24 hours apart. Once the pills run out, make sure to start a fresh pack the next day. If you do not take this medication regularly, there is a possibility that you could get pregnant. Make sure that your prescription would be refilled before your pills completely run out.
Also remember that if you would be on bed rest for some time or if you would need to undergo surgery or medical tests, you might need to stop taking these pills. Make sure that you would be informing any surgeon or doctor who would be treating you that you are taking birth control pills.
While you are taking this medication, you may be advised by your doctor to come in for regular consultations. Make sure that you would not be missing any appointments.
