Indications of Citalopram
Citalopram is essentially used for the effective treatment of depression. However, the drug could also be used for any other conditions that have been determined by your doctor.
An SSRI or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, Citalopram works through the restoration of the balance of serotonin. Serotonin is a natual substance found in the brain that helps in improving certain mood problems.
When Not To Use Citalopram
Citalopram should not be used if the patient is: allergic to an ingredient found in Citalopram; taking escitalopram; or taking or have taken monoamine oxidase inhibitors.
Administration of Citalopram
Citalopram should be used as directed by a physician. The medicine label should also be
read thoroughly for the exact dosage instructions.
Citalopram has an additional patient information sheet which is called a Medication Guide. Make sure that this is read carefully and should be read again every time the drug is refilled.
Citalopram can be administered with or without food intake. It is advisable to take Citalopram at the same every day to lessen the risk of forgetting to take a dose. Also make sure that Citalopram is continually taken even when you already feel well. Make sure that there are no doses missed to ensure the effectiveness of the drug.
The administration of Citalopram should also not be abruptly stopped without first consulting with the physician, as side effects could occur. These side effects could include emotional and/or mental changes, tingling of the skin or numbness, confusion, dizziness, unusual tiredness or trouble sleeping. The patient needs to be closely monitored as the administration of Citalopram is started as well as when a there is a change is dosage made.
If a dose of Citalopram is missed, it has to be taken as soon as possible. However, if the next dose is scheduled already, the missed dose cou;d just be skipped and just go back to the regular dose schedule. Two doses should never be taken at one time.
Side Effects of Citalopram
Though most medicines generally cause some possible side effects, many experience no, or just minor side effects. Make sure that a physician is consulted if any of the following common side effects persist or worsen: diarrhea; decreased sexual desire or sexual ability; drowsiness; increased sweating; dry mouth; dizziness; loss of appetite; lightheadedness; stuffy nose; nausea; or tiredness.
